Mental Health First Aid (HLC)

06/12/2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

It is estimated that 1 in 5 Americans will experience a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year. The impacts of this are far reaching when you consider how that could also affect family, friends and colleagues. As such, this workshop discusses various mental health conditions and topics including suicide. Please note that it is not, however a crisis resource. If you are feeling suicidal, thinking about hurting yourself, or are concerned that someone you know may be in danger of hurting himself or herself, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255). It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is staffed by certified crisis response professionals. But given the prevalence of mental health issues (which are likely only compounded by the pandemic and other recent events) the Office of Employee Development and Wellness will be offering a workshop designed to not only reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, but also give the participants resources to support those who may be struggling.

During this 90 minute workshop participants will learn how to:
  • Assess for risk
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help
